The Wild Robot Escapes takes place in a world that looks very similar to ours, but what are some hints that the story takes place in the future? Talk about this with your family as you listen or read together!
Have you noticed anything that makes you think this story takes place in the future? Also, how did Roz help the cows understand her better? Make a prediction -how will Roz escape back to her remote, wild island? Keep listening!
Peter Brown is doing a great job tugging at our hearts! Roz is homesick and so much of her thinking is about what she misses from her life on the island with Brightbill and all their friends is heartbreaking. But did you notice how she enjoys Jaya and Jad? Are they more than just her ticket to escape the farm life? I'll say this every night, keep listening!
Were any of you confused by the word bluffing? Well, Roz really got those wolves to obey her without using violence. I think it is very interesting that she is programmed to not to be violent. These next few chapters are titled "The Summer, The Tornado, The Broken Robot". Before you listen to them, make a prediction about what will happen based on the titles and what your own experiences bring to those words. Enjoy!
Were you correct in your predictions? Peter Brown described summer beautifully. It made me really miss the light breeze of a summer evening, the sound of cicadas or peepers, and the flash of lightening bugs. The tornado was terrifying, especially with what happens to Roz and I held my breath when Nadine offered to upgrade Roz! What do you notice about how Roz's relationship with the children changes? Do you think she is still planning to escape?
Readers, now we have Roz realizing she is famous among migrating geese! But her memories were painful and it was starting to seem impossible to escape...until at the end of chapter 35, Peter Brown ends with, "...someone from her old life was about to appear." I wonder what you all were thinking, because I know who I was hoping it would be. Did you hope it would be Brightbill? So did I. Let's find out why chapter 36 is called The Unusual Flock.
Wow!! Brightbill is reunited with his mother AND Jaya and Jad are Roz's allies. Yesterday's chapters had a lot of big events. Now they are planning to help remove her Transmitter so she can escape and not be tracked. I loved that Jaya and Jad were persistent in finding information on how to remove it. Readers, I am torn, I feel like Roz has become a mother of sort to the children, but she still wants to escape (which I understand too)! How do you feel? Should she stay on the farm and keep it running for the Shareef family or should she go home? Let's keep reading!
Readers, that dinner with the Shareef family was what I call bittersweet. It was happy and sad. Jaya, Jad, and Mr. Shareef were happy to have Roz in their life and when she gave them the journal of Cyrus Shareef, my heart skipped a beat! But Roz is not like any other robot and she "marched back to the barn feeling something like worry, confusion, and guilt." I just love that she feels and is not like any other robot. I guess that is one of the reasons I love her so much. What makes you love Roz or any of the other characters? Talk about that with your family. Then enjoy listening the next few chapters.
So readers...how did you feel when Jaya and Jad gave Roz their last order? How about the airship with the Reco robots? Did you know about all the different types of farms Peter Brown listed in chapter 53? Do you think all the farms exist today or which ones do you think might exist in the future? And then the last line in chapter 54! Who do you think is watching Roz? Is this good or bad? Let's read on.
Oh my goodness, the hailstorm was scary! Anyone out there fall in love with Sprinkles as much as I did? I won't ever be able to look at another skunk the same way (I am not getting close to them)! Why do the wolves attack Roz even though they can't eat her? Enjoy tonight's chapters.
Wow! There were some scary moments - the hunters thinking they would have goose for dinner, being smashed by Thud the ram (who turned out to be a helpful fella), and then of course Shadow's attack! Readers, I noticed at the end of the chapter, Roz is feeling! In the first book, Peter Brown would say she "feels something like". She has definitely changed and is not like other robots...not to mention, she feels sorry for Shadow who just attacked her. Have fun listening tonight!
Another set of exciting chapters!!! I was on the edge of my seat wanting to know how Roz would survive her trip in the ocean...and now we met another friend of this amazing pair, Coral the whale! And now Roz has another challenge - how to survive a trip through town. Talk about how Roz will camouflage herself this time!
It's all about survival through camouflage, observations, and trust. Roz had to blend in with the yards and robots. As usual, she made careful observations of each environment and learned how to move safely. Last of all, she continued to trust Brightbill even when they were separated and had to move in different ways to reach home. Think about how the little details in the next few chapters will lead to big ideas as you continue to listen.
Do you like cliffhangers? Chapter 76 literally left us hanging and Roz climbing down a hole to escape RECOs and humans that seem to be realizing there is something different about Roz. Readers, did you hear the panic in Brightbill's voice as he told her to "Just go!"? Let's not waste anymore time and find out how Roz gets out of this jam!
SO MUCH EXCITEMENT and SO MANY FRIENDS! Then it seems to be over and readers, Peter Brown did this amazing thing with his illustrations. Just when we thought Brightbill and Roz would never see each other again and she was going "down, down, down...then everything suddenly went dark" - you turn the page and there is a two page spread of black, as if we see just what Roz was seeing. And then the greatest part about reading, you turn the page and find out MORE!
So, we got to meet another character last night. Dr. Molovo and Roz had great conversations and just as I was about to trust that Roz would be reunited with Brightbill..the MELTDOWN!!! That completely took my breath away AND broke my heart. Okay...there is more.
All I can say is, "there is no place like home!" And yes, there is still more...
